The record places this group portrait of an entire Black family at the Hermitage, a rice plantation on the Savannah River near Savannah, Georgia, where the cabins of enslaved people once stood. It is dated around 1907, a time when many Black families in the region still lived in former slave quarters and worked the land as tenants or wage laborers. The photograph came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced widely sold views of towns, landscapes and tourist sites. Its catalog subjects, including slave quarters, show how the firm recorded the plantation, and the family's presence before the camera is worth studying alongside that framing.
