Few sites near Savannah carry as much of the region's rice-plantation history as The Hermitage, a riverside estate whose cabins once housed the enslaved men and women who worked its fields. This glass negative, dated about 1907 and made by the Detroit Publishing Company, records those quarters in the early twentieth century, decades after emancipation, when many such buildings were already weathering or being repurposed. Detroit Publishing photographers traveled widely to document American landscapes and places of interest, so the view reflects what the company chose to show visitors and buyers of the time, not a neutral survey of the site. Its value to historians lies partly in that gap between how the place was presented and what it had been.
