The Hermitage was a former rice plantation on the Savannah River, and this view of its oak-lined approach shows the long, shaded drive that marked estates in the area. Before the Civil War, rice cultivation there depended on enslaved labor, and the grand avenues often signaled the wealth built on that system. This glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced commercial views of American towns, roads and landscapes in the early 1900s, so the picture was likely meant for sale as a travel scene. The date is given only as a estimate, around 1907.
