The Hermitage was a rice plantation on the Savannah River outside Savannah, and this stereograph focuses on the rows of slave cabins that stood on its grounds. The caption, "Cabins where slaves were raised for market," reflects how white tourist culture of the early 1900s packaged slavery as a picturesque chapter of the Old South, and the wording deserves a critical reading today. New York publisher Underwood & Underwood issued such stereo cards in large numbers around 1903 for home viewers with stereoscopes, so the image was made for entertainment as much as documentation.
