Edwin Austin Abbey drew this scene of workers and carriers near Savannah, Georgia, for the May 29, 1875, issue of *Harper's Weekly*, where it appeared on page 436. The subject headings place the work among African American laborers in the city's commerce, a theme that recurs in the magazine's Southern coverage in the years after Reconstruction. Abbey was a young illustrator at the time and later became known for large paintings made in England. The engraving offers a record of how labor and trade looked in Savannah in the mid-1870s.
