The title says it outright: the Union monitor Montauk is destroying the Confederate steamer Nashville on the Ogeechee River near Savannah, Georgia, in February 1863. The Montauk was one of the low, turreted ironclads modeled on the Monitor, and its work on the Georgia coast was part of the Union effort to seal Savannah off from the sea. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive hand-colored lithographs throughout the war, issued this version for a public eager for news of naval actions.
