Walker Evans turned his camera on the storefront photography studios of Savannah, Georgia, in 1936, when he was documenting everyday life in the South during the Depression. This picture shows the "penny picture" displays, where cheap portraits were hung or arranged in glass cases so passersby could see what a sitting would produce. Such displays were a common sight on commercial streets, offering ordinary people an affordable way to have their likeness made. The print was made later, as the copyright notice from 1974 suggests, and it preserves a modest, now vanished, part of the city's commercial life.
