This stereograph pair shows Fort McAllister, a Confederate earthwork on the Ogeechee River south of Savannah, Georgia. Its two glass plates, one for each eye, were made in 1864 by David B. Woodbury, who worked with wet collodion, a process that required the plates to be coated and exposed before they dried. The fort guarded the river approach to Savannah, and Union forces captured it in December 1864, opening a supply route from the sea to Sherman's army after its march through Georgia. Viewed through a stereoscope, the pair gives a sense of the fort's depth and the ground around it.
