Few places near Savannah drew as much attention from photographers around 1900 as the Hermitage, a former rice plantation on the Savannah River. This stereograph shows the slave quarters, the small cabins where enslaved people lived and worked on the estate before emancipation in 1865. The printed title, which describes the cabins as where people were "raised for market," reflects how such views were marketed to tourists, who were often invited to romanticize plantation life and overlook the brutality of slavery. Stereo cards like this one were copyrighted and sold in quantity, so the image reveals as much about the appetite for nostalgic Southern scenes as about the buildings themselves.
