Few subjects in this set carry the weight of the row of slave houses at Hermitage Plantation in Georgia, which Walker Evans photographed in February 1935. The plantation, a rice-growing estate near Savannah, was built on labor performed by enslaved people, and these modest dwellings were the quarters where many of them lived. Evans was working in the South for a federal documentary project at the time, and he turned his camera toward the physical traces of slavery that were still standing in the landscape. Looking closely at the plain construction and spacing of the houses shows how the plantation was organized around the labor it depended on.
