Chippewa Square on Bull Street is shown here with a carved monument in the foreground bearing the name "Bartow," which sets this view apart from other pictures of the square. The square was named for the 1814 Battle of Chippawa in the War of 1812 and is one of the original squares in James Oglethorpe's 1733 city plan. Detroit Publishing Company photographers worked across the United States around 1900, recording towns and landmarks, and this glass negative captures a scene with children at play. It shows how Savannah's squares served as everyday public gathering places.
