Two nearly identical glass plates, one for each eye, make up this stereograph of ruined houses in Savannah, Georgia, and viewed through a stereoscope they merge into a single three-dimensional scene. Confederate General William J. Hardee withdrew from Savannah in December 1864 rather than defend it, so the city surrendered to Union forces under William T. Sherman without a major battle and was spared the fires that destroyed other places on Sherman's march. The photograph is attributed to David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, and it dates from 1865, when the city was under Union occupation and damaged blocks like these were a visible reminder of the war.
