The Meldrim House stands out among Savannah views because it served as General William T. Sherman's headquarters after Union forces entered the city in December 1864, at the end of his march from Atlanta to the coast. Sherman sent President Lincoln a telegram from the city offering it as a Christmas present, and he stayed there through that winter. This 1865 image is a stereograph pair made from two glass negatives using the wet collodion process. The photographer is attributed to David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, and pictures like this one documented occupied Southern cities in the months after the war.
