Few photographs show Hiroshima as it looked from the air before the atomic bomb fell on the city on Aug. 6, 1945. This aerial view was taken by the U.S. Army before that date, and its verso bears a June 26, 1946 stamp, showing that it later passed through the New York World-Telegram and the Sun newspaper photograph collection. The contrast it offers is striking: the city's streets, rivers and built-up districts appear intact, a reminder of the baseline against which the bombing's destruction is measured.
