Taken from the air in late June 1946, this view shows Hiroshima about ten months after the atomic bomb struck the city on August 6, 1945. The official U.S. Army photograph shows central districts flattened, with only a few standing structures amid open ground where dense neighborhoods once stood. It was the first atomic weapon used in war, and aerial pictures like this one helped people outside Japan grasp the scale of the destruction. Look closely at the scattered foundations and bare lots to see how little of the old street pattern remained.
