Taken on June 26, 1946, this aerial view shows Nagasaki roughly ten months after the atomic bomb fell on the city on August 9, 1945. Army photographers flew over the ruins to document the destruction, and the wide angle captures how the blast flattened large stretches of the city while leaving some hillside structures standing. The print comes from the New York World-Telegram and the Sun newspaper photograph collection, which reflects how American papers used such images to show readers the scale of a weapon that had only just come into public view.
