An aerial view of Tokyo from 1945, taken after a bombing raid (the catalog record marks the cause with a question mark), comes from an album of 20th Air Force operations assembled by Ira Clarence Eaker. The 20th Air Force flew B-29 bombers from bases in the Mariana Islands, and in March 1945 its incendiary raids on Tokyo destroyed large parts of the city's densely built wooden neighborhoods. Photographs like this one were used to assess damage and report results, and they now show how much of the urban fabric was lost in the final months of the war.
