This aerial view shows Tokyo after bombing raids carried out by the U.S. Army Air Forces' 20th Air Force, which flew B-29 Superfortresses against Japan from bases in the Mariana Islands and China in 1944 and 1945. The print comes from an album of 20th Air Force operations assembled among the papers of Gen. Ira C. Eaker, a senior American airman. Its subject is the wartime destruction of a major city, and the most devastating raid on Tokyo, in March 1945, burned out large sections of the capital. Aerial photographs like this one were used to assess damage and guide later missions.
