Musashino, a city on the western edge of Tokyo, is the subject of this 1945 aerial view, which its caption describes as taken before the 20th Air Force bombed the area. Reconnaissance photographs like this one helped American planners identify factories, rail lines, and built-up districts that could be targeted from the high altitudes at which B-29 Superfortresses flew. The print comes from an album of 20th Air Force operations assembled by the collection of Ira Clarence Eaker, a senior Army Air Forces officer. Viewed today, it shows how the Tokyo plain looked from the air just before the air campaign reached the capital's outskirts.
