Few images show the scale of wartime bombing as plainly as this 1945 aerial view of Tokyo after raids by the U.S. 20th Air Force. The print comes from the Ira Clarence Eaker collection and sits in an album of 20th Air Force operations, so it was assembled as part of the official record of the campaign. The incendiary raid of March 9-10, 1945, burned out large sections of the densely built wooden city, and photographs like this one documented how far the destruction reached. Estimates of the dead from that single night run to about 100,000, a toll worth keeping in mind when studying the pattern of ruin across the frame.
