This aerial view shows Musashino, a city on the western edge of Tokyo, under attack by the U.S. Army Air Forces' 20th Air Force in 1945. The B-29 Superfortress bombers of the 20th Air Force struck Japan's industrial centers in the closing months of the war, and the Tokyo suburbs held factories that built aircraft engines and other war materiel. Photographs like this one were compiled into official albums to record bomb damage and assess the results of the campaign. Its vantage point lets viewers see how the raids spread across an urban and industrial landscape.
