The view here looks toward the granite peaks of Mount Desert Island, the rugged landmass that rises across the water from the Maine coast around Frenchman Bay. Those mountains drew painters and summer visitors through the 19th century, and their bare, rounded crests helped make the island a favorite subject for the Hudson River School and later artists. Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the island, is among the peaks that define the skyline, and much of the surrounding land became part of Acadia National Park in 1919. Roads like this one offered some of the best vantage points for seeing the range whole.
