Mount Desert Island sits off the Maine coast, and this view captures the rugged shoreline that drew painters and summer visitors alike in the late 1800s. The island became a fashionable retreat for wealthy families from Boston, New York and Philadelphia, who built grand "cottages" along its harbors and cliffs. Artists of the Hudson River and Luminist traditions were drawn to the same dramatic light and granite headlands, which helped establish the region as a center of American landscape painting. The coast remains one of the most visited stretches of Maine, with Acadia National Park now covering much of the island.
