Few places on the Atlantic coast pack as much relief into so small an area as Mount Desert Island, and this topographic map shows the terrain that Acadia National Park protects. Closely spaced contour lines crowd around Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the Atlantic coast of the United States, while the island's bays and inlets form an irregular fringe along the shore. The park grew out of land donated by summer residents and conservationists, beginning in 1916 as Sieur de Monts National Monument before taking the Acadia name in 1929. Reading the lines, you can trace how the granite peaks drop steeply toward the sea.
