Saco and Biddeford sit on opposite banks of the Saco River in southern Maine, and this view looks across the water toward the mill district that tied the two towns together. Through the nineteenth century the river's falls powered textile and manufacturing works, and the Saco and Biddeford communities grew up around that industry. Images like this one show how closely the river, the mills and the settled streets depended on one another. Pay attention to the arrangement of the buildings along the bank, which reflects how the work of the river shaped where people lived.
