Saco and Biddeford face each other across the Saco River where it nears the Atlantic in southern Maine, and this bird's-eye view shows both towns together from an elevated vantage point. The sketch was made from nature by John B. Bachelder, a view artist who drew many New England towns, and was printed in color by J.H. Bufford's lithography shop in Boston. Views like this were popular in the mid-nineteenth century because they let residents and businesses see their town laid out whole, with its streets, buildings and waterfront. The river serves as the organizing line of the composition, linking two communities whose growth depended on its falls and water power.
