This view puts a sailing ship against a steep headland of Great Head, a rocky promontory on the Maine coast where bare granite drops straight into deep water. Along this shoreline, schooners and other working sailing vessels were a daily sight through the 1800s, carrying lumber, granite, and fish between Maine harbors and distant ports. Pictures that pair a vessel with a cliff like this capture the period when wind power still shaped the coast's economy, and when the rugged shoreline made navigation a constant concern for mariners.
