The Spouting Horn is a coastal blowhole, a place where the sea has worn a passage into the rock so that each incoming wave is forced upward through a narrow opening. In a storm, that column of spray can rise high above the ledges and carry far over the shore. Maine's rocky coastline, shaped by glaciers and pounded by Atlantic swells, is full of such formations, and visitors have long come to watch them during rough weather. The picture captures that moment of surging water against stone, a reminder of how much force the coast absorbs each time the wind comes up.
