Standing tall and narrow, the obelisk was the kind of monument that anchored a town square or cemetery in Maine, drawing the eye of anyone passing through. Across the United States, obelisks rose through the 19th century to honor a soldier, a founder or a public event, and their tapering shafts recalled ancient Egyptian models. In a view like this, notice how the single column dominates its surroundings with little else competing for attention, which was often the point. The base and inscription, where the monument's purpose was usually recorded, are worth a closer look.
