Few coastal sights in Maine are as oddly named as this one. The title points to Via Mala, the deep Swiss gorge in Graubünden, yet the scene is The Ovens, a sea cave cut into the rocky shore of Maine. The pairing suggests the maker, or the viewer, saw a similar dramatic squeeze of stone and water and borrowed a famous name for it. Sea caves like this were popular subjects for visitors arriving by boat in the 19th century, who came to see waves working through granite. The picture is worth a closer look for how it frames the rock and the sea.
