Seen from across the lake, the Poland Spring House sits on the hillside as a long, multistory resort, the view that guests and visitors would have taken in while arriving by boat or walking the shore. The hotel grew out of a mineral spring that the Ricker family promoted in the 19th century, and it became one of the best-known summer resorts in New England. Its wealthy visitors from Boston and New York helped turn the spring water into a product sold far beyond Maine.
