Poland Spring House was one of the best-known resort hotels in Maine, set in the town of Poland in the Androscoggin Valley. The property grew out of a spring that the Ricker family promoted as a source of healing water in the mid-1800s, and it became a major summer destination for travelers from Boston and New York. Its large wooden hotels, broad verandas, and grounds reflected the era when railroads brought wealthy vacationers to the Maine lakes and hills. The bottled spring water that made the name famous helps explain why the resort drew such attention.
