*Spring on the Androscoggin* shows a river that in Maine has always been a working waterway as well as a scenic one. The Androscoggin rises in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, runs roughly 170 miles, and joins the Kennebec at Merrymeeting Bay. Its falls at Lewiston and Auburn powered mills that shaped both cities for more than a century. Spring was the season when snowmelt pushed the river high and fast, bringing both the risk of flooding and the chance to run the mills at full capacity.
