The Cliffs Near The Ovens shows the rocky shoreline that gives the coast its character, where the sea has worn the granite into steep faces and hollowed-out caves. The Ovens, the sea cave the title names, takes its nickname from the way the surf pushes air and spray through the rock with a hollow boom, much like a furnace at work. Along the Maine coast, such scenes drew summer visitors, artists and photographers in the late 1800s and early 1900s, who came to see the surf and the cliffs up close. Look at the scale of the rock against the water and the small figures, if any, to judge how dramatic the drop must have felt to those standing above it.
