The name Thunder Cave suggests a place where the sea makes itself heard, with waves pounding into rock and echoing back through the stone. Maine's rocky coastline, carved by centuries of surf, is full of such spots, and many became destinations in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when steamers and rail lines brought summer visitors to the shore. Pictures of these sites often show how visitors dressed, traveled and gathered to watch the water, so the scene can tell you as much about the period as about the rock itself.
