Castle Head is a rocky headland on Mount Desert Island, the rugged island off the Maine coast that drew wealthy summer visitors from the mid-1800s onward. Its granite cliffs and open views of the Atlantic made it a favorite subject for painters and photographers working in the region. The island's coastline later became part of Acadia National Park, which was established in 1919 and helped preserve scenes like this one. Look closely at the rock formations and the open water, which show the rugged shore that shaped the island's appeal.
