The record dates this view of the Penobscot River to about 1885, placing it in the heyday of Maine's lumber trade. The Penobscot was one of the busiest timber waterways in New England, and logs cut in the surrounding forests were floated downstream to sawmills at Bangor and other river towns, so the water was as much a working route as a scenic one. The catalog ties the print to a shelflist card naming E.P. & L. Restein, but those details have not been independently verified, so the maker remains uncertain.
