Moonlight silvers the water and tangled trees in this 1862 watercolor of the Chickahominy Swamp in eastern Virginia. The river ran through low, waterlogged woods northeast of Richmond, and in 1862 those wetlands became a serious obstacle for Union forces during the Peninsula Campaign, where soldiers struggled through mud, standing water, and disease-prone ground. The work is credited to an artist named McIlvaine and belongs to the Marian S. Carson collection at the Library of Congress. Its nighttime setting gives a quieter view of a landscape more often remembered for the fighting that took place there.
