The Moore House near Yorktown is tied to the close of the American Revolution, since British and American officers negotiated the terms of Cornwallis's surrender there in 1781. This watercolor shows its front in 1862, when Union forces under McClellan were besieging Yorktown during the Peninsula Campaign. The inscription, "Struck by a shell from Yorktown," records the damage the house took from artillery fire, a reminder of how the fighting marked the older landmarks of the peninsula. The artist is listed only as McIlvaine, so the record offers little more on who made it or why.
