Rather than a view of the house's front, this watercolor shows its rear, with the York River opening out beyond it. The inscription identifies that river as the place where the terms of the British surrender were agreed in October 1781. The Moore House served as the setting for those negotiations, which ended the main fighting of the Revolution. When the painter worked in 1862, Union forces were campaigning on the Yorktown peninsula, so the old battlefield was being seen through a wartime lens.
