A moonlit view of Yorktown, Virginia, sets this watercolor apart from the daytime town scenes on this board, since its subject is the night itself. The work is dated 1862, the year Union forces under George B. McClellan besieged the Confederate defenses at Yorktown during the Peninsula Campaign, and the Confederates withdrew in early May. The artist is recorded only as McIlvaine, and the painting is part of the Marian S. Carson collection at the Library of Congress, where its quiet nighttime mood offers a contrast to the usual images of the war's damage and troop movements.
