Hampton, a port town on the Virginia Peninsula near the mouth of the James River, was set on fire by Confederate forces in August 1861 as they withdrew ahead of Union troops based at nearby Fort Monroe. McIlvaine's 1862 watercolor shows the town in the aftermath, when chimneys and gutted walls stood where houses and shops had been. Works like this give a firsthand view of the damage that the war and deliberate burning left on Southern communities.
