Hampton, on the Virginia Peninsula, was set on fire in August 1861 as Confederate troops pulled back, and this 1862 watercolor shows one of the church ruins left behind. Union forces occupied the area soon after, using nearby Fort Monroe as a base. The artist, recorded only as McIlvaine, chose watercolor, a medium well suited to careful, detailed studies of damaged buildings. The drawing comes from the Marian S. Carson collection at the Library of Congress, and it offers a close look at how the war changed ordinary communities.
