A wagon train winds through Williamsburg, Virginia, in this 1862 watercolor, a detail that sets it apart from scenes of the town's colonial streets and buildings. In the spring of 1862, Union forces advancing up the Virginia Peninsula relied on long lines of wagons to carry food, ammunition, and equipment, and Williamsburg lay along that route. The Battle of Williamsburg was fought there in May 1862. The work is attributed to McIlvaine, and its record places it among Civil War-era American watercolors in the Marian S. Carson collection at the Library of Congress.
