Yorktown is the setting here, a village on the York River where Union forces under Gen. George McClellan laid siege to Confederate defenses during the Peninsula Campaign in the spring of 1862. The town had already drawn attention as the site of Cornwallis's surrender in 1781, which gave the place a long reputation before the war. Watercolors like this one, made by an artist working near the lines, were a common way to record camps, earthworks and daily army life when photography was still cumbersome in the field. The record credits the work to McIlvaine, and it is worth looking closely at how the drawing balances the military encampment with the surrounding landscape.
