Known as the LaFayette House, this Yorktown dwelling appears in an 1862 watercolor, painted during a later war on ground that had seen the Marquis de Lafayette's troops in 1781. That spring Union forces under George B. McClellan besieged the town, and the military camps named in the record spread across the surrounding fields. The inscription is only partly legible, reading "LaFayette House near Our House" with a question mark, so the exact wording of the title is uncertain. Watercolors like this one are valued as firsthand views of landscapes that soldiers were occupying at the time.
