Inscribed as the place "where Washington was married," this 1862 watercolor depicts St. Peter's Church near the White House plantation on the Pamunkey River in New Kent County. Tradition holds that George Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis at the church in January 1759, and the building was a familiar landmark in colonial Tidewater long before the war. In 1862, the area became part of the Union army's Peninsula Campaign, when White House Landing served as a major supply depot, and the soldiers listed among the picture's subjects reflect that wartime presence.
