The White House stood on the Pamunkey River near West Point, Virginia, on an estate that belonged to the Custis family, descendants of Martha Washington's first marriage. The inscription names the owner as Mr. Custis and later as Mr. Washington, which reflects how the property changed hands. In 1862 the landing became a Union supply base during McClellan's Peninsula Campaign, and steamboats like the one in this view carried troops, horses, and stores up the river. The watercolor captures a quiet Virginia house just before the war turned it into a busy wartime depot.
