A watercolor dated 1864 ties Union soldiers to the Pamunkey River in eastern Virginia, a waterway that became a vital supply route during the Civil War. That year, Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant used the river to move men and supplies toward the front during the Overland Campaign. Painted by hand rather than photographed, the work offers a more personal view of soldiers and the riverside landscape at a time when the Pamunkey was busy with military traffic. It is part of the Marian S. Carson collection at the Library of Congress.
