Joseph Avery, shown stranded on rocks in the Niagara River in July 1853, appears in a scene of real peril rather than a posed studio portrait. This quarter-plate daguerreotype survives in its original case, whose central floral motif and scrolled border reflect the decorative taste of the 1850s. Niagara Falls drew steady crowds of visitors then, and accounts of drownings and narrow escapes in the river were widely told. The plate is a rare early attempt to photograph an unfolding danger rather than a sitter at rest.
